Self-Assessment Questions
Being a Family Day Educator can be a very rewarding career. However, some of the following questions can help you determine if this is the right job for you:
- Am I 18 years or older?
- Am I ready to be a business owner?
- Do I hold a minimum of Certificate III in children’s service?
- Do I have past experience caring for children?
- Am I professional in my approach?
- Can I offer flexibility for the children and families in my care?
- Are my communication skills strong?
- Do I feel I can build professional relationships?
- Can I offer a weekly educational program to children guided by the Early Years Learning Framework?
- Is my family ready to share my time and home with others?
- Will I abide by the Laws and Regulations in the sector?
Requirements to Get Started
Essentially, you will be a self-employed contractor. You will set your own days and hours of operation and choose your hourly rates with our guidance. Here are the requirements to get started:
- ABN registration (you will be required to perform your own tax and financial needs)
- Insurance (full comprehensive public liability will be required)
- Permission from a landlord (or be the home owner)
- Register for a PRODA number (no cost)
- National Police Clearance
- Blue Card (for yourself and your family members or regular visitors over 18 years of age)
- Certificate for First Aid in a childcare setting
